Mercury Rising

Fast, Shiny and Drives you Crazy

Freefalling Mercury

Here is an original character that I am developing named Mercury. She’s a secret agent (well she isn’t always so secret) that loves all things fast. Much like the element (and planet) that she is named for she is quick, shiny and will drive you crazy. I figure in this image she is in a cloud and has decided to turn things off just for the feeling of free fall (she likes that sort of thing).

I have decided her full color scheme yet and when you see the earlier versions below you’ll see some variations. I haven’t perfected her yet, but there will be more to come.

Mercury Round 1 The Jet Pack will be back

Above my first run at Mercury and another agent you will see next week (also some blacked out secret stuff).

Blast off

Mercury Round 2

Here she’s a little closer to the one above, and you have to love a rocket jet pack.

My Marker Rendering of Mercury's Bike

Here’s my first run at one of Mercury’s pet projects. Look for more on agents Mercury and Abe soon, and remember that any resemblance to people living or dead is purely coincidental.

Connnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

Where have all the dollars gone?

CONNNNNNNNNNN!

Last weekend I experienced my first Comic Convention at the NYCC. It was a bit overwhelming, and it emptied my pockets, but it was really fun to meet artists that I have admired.

I did not wear a costume, but I think this weeks’ doodle captures the spirit of the con.

Here are some very cool pen and water color drawings by Katie Cook http://katiecandraw.typepad.com/

Sooo Cute!

Her name is…

She has a name

This week goes with my series of strong women, and continues the third week of Firefly. If you don’t know Vera then you need to watch “Our Mrs. Reynolds.” Go ahead and check it out on Netflix or Hulu or whatever because if you haven’t watched Firefly then you should.

I tried to do all of this week’s post from Illustrator, but ended up back in Photoshop for finishing things up. I’m including my reference photo for Vera and the lace and asking you all a question, “Where is the boundary of Plagiarism?” I struggled with whether to use Illustrator’s live trace or to go over the photo by hand. Ultimately I felt that I was adding enough to the design to make it my own, but I still give credit to the folks who took the pic of the prop and scanned the lace (I tried to scan some myself and it just came out blurry).

I have a designer friend that says it’s not plagiarism if you change the source material at least 75% . I’ve heard from other sources that it’s not plagiarism if you change it the original artist wouldn’t be able to tell that you used her material.

So where do I fit this week? Is my Vera an homage, a theft or an original design that used reference?

Here’s another version that I did after my first time posting. I took a look at the design and tried to find more ways to make the gun mine. So I took off any extra dimensions and simplified the colors more. Then I shifted Vera to the gun to make the touch a little more subtle. How’s this one plagiarism wise?

Vera Take 2

And because I had insomnia tonight and couldn’t leave well enough alone. I went in to Google Translate and took some English translated into Traditional Chinese to add some flavor. I hope the translations are really what they said they were and that I don’t offend any of my Chinese readers.

A Recipe For Unpleasantness

She understands. She doesn't comprehend.

You guys did so well guessing last weeks images, I wanted to do another without a label. I hope I didn’t make it too easy. I couldn’t get the animation to go automatically so you have to click on it to see the full effect.

Shiny

What do these three things have in common?

For this week’s blog you have to guess.

Moses Moses

Staff of Moses

Moses Staff

This is my interpretation of the staff of Moses and it was a challenge. I suppose the reason that I chose it is that I have felt like a stutterer in terms of art lately.

Moses complained that he couldn’t be God’s speaker because he wasn’t smooth of tongue. God asked him what he did have and Moses said a staff so God said to throw it down. It became a snake and later split the Red Sea and made a rock gush water.

None of it was the staff. It was all God, but Moses had to do his part by throwing down what he had. So here’s my staff this week. My stuttering offering.

Who is that man?

The Dr has some difficulty with his sonic screwdriver

I knew I shouldhn't have left the shark door open

This week’s doodle is inspired by the Dr. Who Christmas Carol episode. It’s a fun watch and I started a couple of other drawings, but didn’t get a chance to finish them. I may stick them on to this post later.

Nothing to fear but the fear agent himself

Fear Agent Heath Huston Blasting His way out of Trouble

The New Omni Blast Weed Wacker

This week’s doodle is straight from space. My take on a character named Heath Huston from the comic series Fear Agent. He’s a Texan that is always getting into trouble and then blasting his way out.

Here’s the cover of the first trade paperback.

The King has climbed the building

The King of Rock and Roll gets a radioactive spider bite

Spider King Uuuh huh

This week’s blog is a mash-up of two pop culture icons. A lip curling hip shaker and a web spinning wall crawler. I spent the last week in Memphis and while I was there I was introduced to The Spectacular Spider-man by my 1st cousin in law once removed. I also noticed the murmurs of Elvis week in the city that served as his home and somehow the two ideals seemed ripe for a combo (I mean they both have charisma and armpit wings it seems like an obvious connection).

A DVD that is fun to watch

Spectacular Spectacular Spiderman

Nothin but a hound dog

Are you lonesome tonight?

Unfortunately I got to the party a little late because The Spectacular Spiderman was canceled after two seasons (spanning 2008 and 2009), and Elvis died 34 years ago.

However, the DVD set has helped me get caught up on Spidey and my dad ensured that I was never lacking in Elvis education while growing up (he made sure I was familiar with both the King’s music and his uneven (to be generous) acting).

So enjoy this week’s hunka hunka a burnin blog.
