Page Five Rough Sketch
Sometimes in my life I bite off more than I can chew. This is one of those times. Not only did I decide to launch a web comic January 2nd, but I also decided to continue a tradition I started last year of a new Facebook profile drawing every day of the month of January.
Last year around this time I had one child, a full time job and an illustration a day. This year I have a full-time job, a weekly webcomic, two children and an illustration a day. I almost made it, but I found myself bogged down last week and I got way off with my pace for the comic. I posted page 4 quite late last Monday, and I didn’t think that I could reasonably complete this week’s page in time to post today.
So I decided that I would bribe your forgiveness by showing you that I am working on the next page of TAG! (it’s right up there), and sharing one of the “rainy day” illustrations that I was able to bank during a good drawing week. I know it’s not a fully inked TAG!, but it’s a window into my illustration process and another illustration of my Superman ala Steampunk.
This is Kal El in all of his Victorian glory drawn in the style of Bruce Timm. My interpretation of an intrepreation and Yes I was going for the Meta! I also want you to know that I only used 1 (that’s right 1) gradient in the entire illustration (see if you can find it).

So I hope you will forgive me for missing my TAG! deadline and I will continue to work on finishing page 5 of Name TAG!

All right I’ll admit it. I am out of buffer and up to date. This one would have been a lot more fun without such an impending deadline. Must start next weeks.

Here’s page three and it’s the first with a mixed media approach to lettering. I appreciated the feedback from last week’s page and I even tried to act on it. I hand lettered Buddy’s dialogue to give more of a spoken feel. I kept the typed format for Klink because she’s a hologram projection with a computer voice so I justified that it shouldn’t feel “spoken” so much as produced. I like the ideal of the combination, but I think that I might write the words on a seperate page next time so that I can move them around if I need to or even edit them. I changed the dialogue for Klink as I placed it, but it would be really hard to do that for the handwritten stuff.
Overall I had fun drawing this page, but it has given me a new appreciation of well written books. I wrote and rewrote and rewrote trying to cut down exposition and I even dropped off a couple of gags because I literally couldn’t figure out where to put them on the page (or in the flow of the narrative). No spoilers, but next week’s page is a lot fewer words and lot more action.

Okay this page was tough. I loved doing the drawing, and then realized that I hadn’t left any space for the words or even considered exactly what I was going to say.
I have really enjoyed getting going on this project because it is forcing me to learn as I go and it’s helping me to appreciate what other artists do to create a webcomic. I drew this comic and then scanned it and added all of the words etc in Photoshop. I think that next week I am going to give Illustrator a try.
I hope that you are enjoying the adventure and I look forward to the next installment of YURIT. So anyone have tips on lettering or wordbubbling?
